Twitter's deleted embedded tweets have been quietly wiped out on various websites across the web.
Twitter's Deleted Embedded Tweets
As per a news story by Tech Crunch, Twitter changed how deleted source tweets that have been embedded in a website now looks.
Previously, once a tweet has been embedded, even if it was already deleted it will still show a text quote on the websites that it was shared. However, the source tweet will no longer be available on Twitter.
That said, embedding a tweet on a website used to be a way to preserve it even if the user who published it decided to take it down.
Twitter Wipes Out Deleted Tweet Embeds
However, this time around, according to a recent report by Social Media Today, Twitter released a new update, which quietly removes embedded tweets once the source deletes them.
That said, once a Twitter user deletes a tweet, it would also be removed from sites that have embedded it, making it vanish elsewhere on the web-unless someone published a screenshot of it.
Instead of previously showing a text quote of a tweet, once the source has taken it down, it now leaves a blank Twitter tile, which visually represents that the source has been deleted.
A tech advisor, Kevin Marks, was one of the first folks who discovered the change that Twitter silently rolled out.
Marks further explained that the Twitter update now shows deleted tweets "as an empty white blob." He also noted that previously a deleted tweet still leaves a blockquote.
That said, news outlets or other online publications that have previously embedded tweets on their stories might end up having blank white gaps as deleted tweets have transformed into that look.
Twitter's Response
Meanwhile, the product manager of Twitter, Eleanor Harding, explained in her tweet that the social media giant is "doing this to better respect when people have chosen to delete their Tweets."
The Twitter exec offered that the microblogging platform will "have better messaging that explains why the content is no longer available" in the near future.
So, as it turns out, Twitter is still planning to ditch the white tile with something that would give a clear explanation of why the embedded tweet has vanished.
