"Elden Ring's" difficulty might be a moot point for gamers for the foreseeable future, as with any other "Soulsborne" game ever released by FromSoftware. But if you're not one to die way too many times and just want to enjoy the story, maybe this new mod is for you.
PCGamer reports that the game now has an unofficial easy mode via a mod created by modder odashikonbu. Hosted on NexusMods right now, this mod makes "Elden Ring" a far safer romp than FromSoft would've liked otherwise.
The mod, however, doesn't exactly lower the game's difficulty. It neither makes enemies easier to dodge or kill, nor limits the areas where they spawn. What it does is reduce the damage your character receives by half, while also giving you a 25% damage boost. Aside from that, your rune acquisition is increased by 10.
With all of these changes (that rune acquisition buff, especially), it could be way easier to get OP in "Elden Ring" if you install this mod. However, odashikonbu made it clear that you should only use their mod during offline mode, as it will pose some problems to your game.
According to the modder, they designed the mod specifically to make the game easier for "angry gamers"--perhaps those who are prone to rage-quitting like crazy, like this guy who posted what remains of his PS5 controller on Reddit:
But since "Elden Ring" mods are exclusive to PC, console players who just want an easier romp through the Lands Between will just have to "git gud."
Another Modder Makes A Hard Mode Mod In Protest
Apparently in response to odashikonbu and other people's attempts at making "Elden Ring" easier, modder SilentVerge created his own Hard Mode mod he calls "Prepare To Die"--an obvious ode to "Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition."
As per the mod's description, it is "not for the faint of heart" or for players who easily rage quit. That's because the mod reportedly revamps the game's enemy AI and gives them stat buffs, all of which SilentVerge says are on-par with enemies on New Game Plus mode.
According to SilentVerge, they created the Hard Mode mod because they were "sick" of seeing "Elden Ring" mods trying to make the game easier. As such, they made the game even tougher, allowing the enemy AI to see and hear players from much further away.
Enemies will also spend more time looking for players, and going in for stealth kills is far tougher because enemies will hear you creeping up from behind.
Is 'Elden Ring' Really That Hard?
On PC, the game's difficulty was at the forefront earlier this month when it was revealed that only over half of players have beaten the first major boss, Godrick the Grafted. In Steam's Achievements page, only 61.1% of all PC players have earned the achievement for beating Godrick so far-up from the 55% it was at on March 9th.
Nevertheless, you now have a choice with these two new "Elden Ring" mods. Do you bite the bullet and make the game easier? Or do you want to feel unimaginable pain and suffering? Your call.
