Apple is set to release a new 30W charger before 2022 ends. The difference with this new charger is that Apple will use gallium nitride or GaN in its construction.
Apple's 30W Charger
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, gallium nitride is a material that lets chargers produce less heat, so they can be smaller while still offering high wattages.
Kuo reported that the new 30W charger could have a new form factor design, making it smaller compared to Apple's current 30W charger.
Apple's first GaN charger was the 140W brick that shipped with the latest 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, the much lower wattage of the new 30W charger would make it a better fit for one of the tech giant's iPads, iPhones, or lower-powered laptops like the MacBook Air, according to The Verge.
In 2021, iPhone 13 Pro Max reportedly upped the iPhone's maximum charging speed to 27W when used with the correct charger, which could explain why the tech giant is looking to upgrade the 30W power brick, according to Pocket Now.
However, 27W is weak compared to the chargers that mid-range Android phones need for fast charging. For example, OnePlus' Nord CE2 supports 65W charging through Oppo's proprietary SuperVOOC standard, allowing it to be fully charged in over half an hour.
Meanwhile, Samsung S22 Plus and Samsung S22 Ultra can fast-charge at only 45W. However, it is unclear whether iPhone users might see the new 30W charger ship inside the box of devices.
Charging iPhone 13 Pro Max
IPhone 13 Pro Max users can charge faster than other iPhone models. YouTuber ChargerLAB tested the charging time, and it showed that the phone sips up to 27 watts of power when it is plugged into a compatible charging brick.
If you want to fill up the massive battery of the iPhone 13 Pro Max as fast as possible, you may want to get the upcoming 30W charger as it can charge from zero to 100% in less than 90 minutes. Also, since it produces less heat, you won't have to worry about overheating.
According to 9to5Mac, the other iPhone models like iPhone 12 can use around 22W charging speeds.
The benefit of a bigger charger is limited to the iPhone Pro Max as the smaller ones like the iPhone 13 Pro could only charge at 20W. However, all of this goes out of the window if you are charging wirelessly or with the MagSafe puck, you will be limited to 15W.
If you need a 30W brick now and you can't wait for Apple to release the upgraded version, you can check your other Apple devices because their boxes include 30W chargers with its new MacBook Air, and the 61W charger that comes with MacBook Pros could also provide the 27 watts that your phone needs.
Also, make sure to check the wattage near the prongs, so you can figure out the amps and voltage. If you can't find a 30W charger from the other devices, you can purchase one from Apple or wait for the upgraded version.
In 2021, Kuo confirmed that Apple chargers would switch from Lightning to USB-C.
In the same year, Apple's rival Xiaomi unveiled its own version of Apple's MagSafe wireless charger.
