Ryzen 7000 CPUs based on AMD's new Zen 4 architecture were briefly teased during CES 2022, but there isn't a lot of other information sharted regarding the specs. But this rumor based on a recent driver could reveal something new about the chips.
The aforementioned AMD SMU (System ManagementUnit) driver reportedly stated that Zen 4 CPUs will be coming with integrated RDNA2 graphics clocked at 1.1GHz, according to Tom's Hardware. For the unaware, RDNA2 is the same architecture used in Team Red's RX 6000 series and the GPUs found in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Twitter user Komachi_Ensaka was among the first to spot the details in the SMU driver:
As per the tweet, they mention that the integrated GPU will have a total of four compute units (CUs) clocked at the aforementioned clock speed of 1.1GHz (1100Mhz). Two CUs comprise a single WGP (workgroup processor), for a total of two WGPs. Furthermore, each CU contains a total of 64 stream processors (SPs), which sums up to a total of 256 SPs.
At this clock speed and configuration, WCCFTech believes that the iGPUs are being designed for energy efficiency rather than performance. So don't expect the RDNA2 chips in Ryzen 7000 CPUs to be as powerful as RX 6000 graphics cards or the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The theoretical performance of the Zen 4 iGPU is expected to hit around 0.5 TFLOPs of single-precision compute. In comparison, the lowest-end, current-gen Ryzen APU, the Ryzen 6600HS, is around triple that, as per the original Tom's Hardware report.
The Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000 CPUs may come around Q3 2022 launch (via NotebookCheck), and will be featuring the brand-new socket AM5 which is LGA instead of PGA (pins are on the board instead of the CPU itself).
Will You Be Able To Game On These AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs?
Based on the rumored specs, it's not likely that you'll be able to play this generation's most demanding AAA games. But it doesn't mean that the RDNA2 iGPU in Zen 4 chips are exactly pushovers.
In an analysis by VideoCardz, they claimed that the 4 CU-powered integrated graphics has roughly one-third of the performance of Valve's Steam Deck handheld gaming PC, which really isn't bad.
The Steam Deck is built to run almost any game on the Steam library, including some of the most hardware-demanding titles of the past and current-generation. Its integrated RDNA2 GPU, for one, is powerful enough to play "Horizon Zero Dawn" at likely low to medium settings at playable frame rates, as well as "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt."
With that, one can safely assume that the AMD Ryzen 7000 chips' iGPUs will be strong enough to run mostly easy-to-play ESports titles at relatively smooth frame rates. But until this news is confirmed by AMD themselves, take it with a grain of salt.
