Meta defended its Facebook platform after some critics claimed that the top climate change deniers on the online site are unlabeled.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a non-profit organization that prevents hate and misinformation on social media platforms, published a report called "The Toxic Ten."
In this report, the agency claimed that Facebook allows climate change deniers to post their content since they pay the tech firm.
Meta Defends Unlabeled Climate Change Denier Posts
According to Global News' latest report, CCDH released its new study on Wednesday, Feb. 23. The agency's report followed a recent complaint filed by Frances Haugen, a Facebook whistleblower.
She filed her complaint to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this February, claiming that Meta is misleading its investors regarding the company's efforts on tackling COVID-19 and climate change misinformation on the Facebook platform.
Now, with the new report of CCDH, it seems like the misinformation issue on Meta's Facebook site will become more serious.
"Ten publishers - The Toxic Ten - are spreading baseless, unscientific climate denial on their own websites and across social media. They are responsible for 69% of all interactions with climate denial content on Facebook," said the non-profit organization via its official The Toxic Ten report.
Meta Says FB's Labelling Program Was Unavailable
Of course, Meta explained its side why Facebook wasn't able to label the negative posts or content denying climate change.
The giant tech firm said that during the time frame of CCDH's report, Facebook's labeling program was not yet active.
Meta added that the program's unavailability impacted the results of the study. If you want to see further details about CCDH's The Toxic Ten report, you can visit this link.
In other news, Texas sued Meta because of its facial recognition tech, which allegedly violated the users' privacy. Meanwhile, Meta recently rolled out the Facebook Split Payments feature.
