2023 iPhones 5G Cellular Modems
In a new supplier-focused research note that was shared with MacRumors on Thursday, March 11, from which the story comes from, the analyst noted that the chipmakers Broadcom and Qorvo are two of the companies that could benefit from Apple's decision to shift to in-house solutions. This shift could be the latest Apple part that the company decided to make in-house as opposed to outsourcing from other manufacturers.
Fast Company's very own Mark Sullivan as well as Mark Gurman from Bloomberg are two among the several sources who have reportedly noted that Apple is now working on its very own modem for the company's future 2023 iPhones. The development reportedly started back in 2020 and was done after Apple acquired the majority of Intel's very own smartphone modem business from a year earlier in order to bolster its very own efforts.
Switch from Snapdragon
Barclays had previously stated that the modem will be supporting both sub-6GHz as well as mmWave bands of 5G, as most would expect. Apple, as of the moment, is still using Qualcomm modems. This would include the current Snapdragon X55 modem that is being utilized for the iPhone 12 models.
Back in 2019, a new legal settlement made between Qualcomm and Apple had revealed that the company will most likely use the new Snapdragon X60 modem in their 2021 iPhones. This was also reportedly followed by the Snapdragon X65 modem used in 2022 iPhones.
5G modem with TSMC
The new roadmap, however, did mention the whole possibility of the upcoming 2023 iPhones using some sort of unannounced Snapdragon X70 modem. However, this actually now appears a little less likely. Apple's upcoming modems would most likely be manufactured by the company's longtime chipmaking partner known as TSMC.
One huge move that shocked the world was when Apple had suddenly announced its new M1 chips and their decision to give up its use of Intel processors. Apple had previously been one of Intel's largest clients and with its departure, paired with the increasing pressure coming from AMD dominating the CPUs one by one, things are looking more difficult for Intel.

Apple M1 vs Intel
According to a previous article by MacWorld UK, however, Intel benchmarks have shown that the Apple M1 wasn't able to beat the Intel Core i7-118567 CPUs. However, a former Macworld editor and now columnist Jason Snell has actually given his criticisms on how Intel's tests were deliberately not friendly to M1 in a statement shared on SixColors. While AMD and Intel used to be two of the only competing CPU manufactures back in the day, it now seems like Apple has recently joined in the picture.
