Intel's 11th Gen Rocket Lake Alternatives: CPU No Longer Compatible With 400-Series Motherboards

Intel confirmed that it will no longer provide 11th Gen Rocket Lake Desktop CPU's support for 400-series motherboards. The tech giant manufacturer said that its Rocket Lake CPUs will officially now support Z490 & H470 motherboards.

This could be bad news since consumers will no longer be able to support the more budget-oriented motherboards, as reported by WCCF Tech. Intel did this since it is now recycling its LGA1200 socket.

PC Gamer also confirmed that Intel's latest CPU chip is no longer usable on any 400-series motherboard.

"Motherboards based on Intel B460 or H410 chipsets are not compatible with upcoming 11th Gen Intel Core processors," said Intel via PC Gamer.

Alternatives for Rocket Lake CPUs

Although Intel's Rocket Lake CPUs no longer support budget-friendly motherboards. You can still use the 11th Gen Comet Lake Refresh CPUs such as Pentium, Core i3, and Celeron.

This means that the Z490 and H470 motherboards will be the only ones that use Intel's high-end Rocket Lake CPUs. On the other hand, Intel is currently focusing on a BIOS update.

If you are planning to upgrade, then you should apply the latest BIOS before dropping in the new CPU. You can locate these firm files on your motherboard model's product page. Once you find it, you need to go to the support section.

What you need to do when building a PC

Meanwhile, it is advisable to use 500-series motherboards when building PC sets that are based on Intel's 11th Gen Rocket Lake CPUs. Why? Because these chips offer chipset-based USB 3.2 Gen2x2 support, native PCI Express 4.0 support, and improved power delivery.

Right now, most Z490 motherboards will support PCIe 4.0 when paired with a Rocket Lake CPU as well. The giant chip manufacturer specifically designed its current 500-series motherboards to support its Rocket Lake CPU. On the other hand, the 400-series mothership was designed for desktop Comet Lake CPU only. Right now, there are already some 500-series motherboards that are available.
