In most cases, built-in applications are specially-intended ones to get the job done and be a user's software of choice for all processes they need. However, when it comes to text editing, not all software presents the needs for various requirements and work. While editing files with more than 2GB in size is becoming frequent now, EmEditor steps in to finish the job. The newest version of EmEditor supports very large files up to 16 TB or 1,099 billion lines in the 64-bit version.
Some may say that 2GB is too much for a programmer to create or work on. However, the industry is evolving, and technology requires more lines of code to work on and combine for a system to run. EmEditor aims to step in and be the software of choice for these kinds of work, especially as workloads are outpouring and technology is evolving.
One must think that text editors are one of the most slept on software or even one of the most unnecessary pre-installed in a computer, but that is where they are wrong. Even basic HTML and computer codes run on text editors and are given that process, which has now evolved with the improvement of technology, and EmEditor is offering to join the evolution with them.
EmEditor vs. The World: Microsoft's Most Hardcore Text Editor with Impressive Features
EmEditor is figuratively taking the competition against the world. By the world, we mean the other text editors that have been the choice for editors, including Microsoft's Notepad, WordPad, Notepad++, and VS Code. The most noteworthy rival of Em is VS Code, which offers support for multiplatform operating systems, something EmEditor has limits on.
While early on, the EmEditor already has negative or cons-side, this does not altogether make it a bad application for the needs of many, including hardcore editing. When we say hardcore, we mean it. It directly translates to running enormous files on the software and continuing with the work that a programmer is required to do.
Think of it this way, if one tries to run "Cyberpunk 2077" on an entry-level Windows laptop that does not even equip the entry-tier of Intel's CoreI Series, you know you are in serious trouble, and the CPU might give up on you. That directly compares to opening massive text files on software that take up too much RAM processes and the CPU because it could not handle the work.
Massive File Size Accommodation and Nimble Performance
The most commendable feature of the EmEditor Software is its massive file size accommodation and nimble performance despite that file running. We have tried a file of 2GB, even up to 10GB, all text files, and despite the difference in both sizes, it easily opens the file, even with a background process that is up and running (in our case, we tried to open it alongside Adobe Premiere Pro).
Version 20.4.5 is the latest release of the open-source, and it certainly is the most advanced and stable compared to the others. We tried starting to compare Notepad, WordPad, Notepad++, and VS Code to open the same file (2GB) and comparing their time, Windows' Notepad drops out of the competition, followed by WordPad and Notepad++ because their file limit is at 2GB (and it already took 30 minutes without response).
Moreover, the ones left, EmEditor and VS Code, have incomparable times. While EmEditor successfully opened the file in under two minutes (give or take), VS Code took more than seven minutes in our experience. The test was conducted with no background processes, and the computer was fresh from the restart.
Moreover, the latest update version v20.5 can now accomodate a massive support of up to 16TB or 1,099 lines worth of code. These numbers surpass any file editor there is, making EmEditor's services truly a hardcore and heavy-hitter in the industry.
Easy Search Replaces and Editing
Another factor that makes EmEditor standout is its easy replacement of texts within the same massive files in the software and text's vertical lines. We tried replacing all letters "a" with the letter "z," and it has successfully performed the task with ease and speed (less than half a minute).
Comparing it to other text editors, some does not even have these feature as they only give the basic of coding, C++, and other processes one can perform in the software. Moreover, its rival, VS Code, could also replace the text. However, it took a little over two minutes to complete its feature (and the program was somehow unresponsive to succeeding edits).
Both tests highlighted two vertical lines of text, with loads of code inputted, and after the replacement test, we tried to input several lines to see how the application responds. No attempts were made to use Notepad, WordPad, and Notepad++ because they already are unresponsive with the file.
Utilize 64-bit
One thing that we noticed is that if a computer is 64-bit ready, use the 64-bit version of the software. Why? Because the software runs better on native architecture, can load faster, and perform better.
EmEditor: Features and Pricing
EmEditor does not stop in opening large files, good performance, and replacing texts. Here are some of its more advanced features for programmers and editors.
- Accommodates Files up to 248GB
- Syntax Highlighting, Multiple Selection Editing, Multidocument Handling
- Split/Combine Files
- Multithreaded Performance
- Customizable Interface, Quick Launch
- Scriptable macros, Plug-in support
- Windows 10 / 8.1 / 8 / 7 Ready
EmEditor features an annual subscription for the text editor software, which comes at a hefty price of $39.99 for the first year of subscription. However, discounts would be given in the succeeding years that would only cost $19.99.
Lifetime subscription costs $179.99 for one to two licenses, and more licenses increase the fee.
