The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has just announced that it is opening applications for its newest class of astronauts. If you get hired, you can bring home an annual salary of $104,000 to $161,000. That Includes the opportunity to go to space for free!
Ready to apply? Not too fast as NASA comes with many guidelines, you need to meet to qualify. With the hefty amount at stake, expect that the application process is no easy feat. Space.com said that of over 18,000 applicants during the last selection three years ago, only 12 made it! One even resigned during the training program.
How to become a NASA Astronaut?
According to the agency, the application process comes with various stages and rigorous evaluations. Among the criteria for judging includes how well you work with others, stay motivated, make informed decisions, and communicate oral and visual media information. NASA is also looking for someone who can process complex technical information.
That's not all. Successful applicants that made it to the final stage will still have to undergo additional assessments, interviews, psychiatric, and medical screening.
What is the Astronaut Candidate Program
Finally, fortunate candidates who passed the multi-stages will have to complete the Astronaut Candidate Program that could last for two years. Among the things you need to complete in the program are team skill training, aircraft flight readiness, Russian language abilities, and extravehicular activity skills.
For complete requirements, you may go to NASA's website.
Candidates who completed the program will be eligible for a spaceflight mission as an active astronaut corps member. The next big task for the agency is the sustainable moon exploration scheduled by 2028 after that is a 'giant leap' towards planet Mars by mid-2030s.
If you're up for the challenge, remember that NASA is only accepting applications until Mar. 31!
