Jeremy Renner, star of Marvel's Avengers: Endgame, is saying goodbye to his fan app called Jeremy Renner Official after two years.
The actor/singer announced the sad news on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
Jeremy Renner Official App Infiltrated By Trolls
The Jeremy Renner Official app has been around since 2017. The free app served as an online hub for all Renner superfans to see exclusive photos and videos of the 48-year-old celebrity, talk about his work, share their own stories, and just hang out. The app also allowed fans to purchase stars and have the opportunity to be noticed by Renner.
However, according to The Verge, in the past couple of months, the platform encountered a serious troll problem. Posts from genuine Renner fans received nasty messages. Even when the community tried to fight back by posting supportive content, the feed was overrun by a network of internet trolls.
Things turned from bad to worst last week when the group of trolls that infiltrated the app started impersonating Renner himself, posting hateful content and harassing fans.
Jeremy Renner Shuts Down Fan App
"Due to clever individuals that were able to manipulate ways to impersonate me and others within the app I have asked ESCAPEX, the company [that] runs this app to shut it down immediately and refund anyone who has purchased any stars over the last 90 days," reads the message posted by the actor on the app. "Was was supposed to be a place for fans to connect with each other has turned into a place that is everything I detest and can't or won't condone."
While the app is ending, there are still several avenues where fans can follow the star's work. Renner has official social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook. He also has a YouTube account where he posts behind-the-scenes from red carpets or television appearances, press conferences, and his music.
"To all the super-fans who have supported me with your words of encouragement, amazing art, stories and time shared on the app, a genuine THANK YOU," Renner concluded.
Jeremy Renner Official is not the only latest celebrity app to shut down. In January, pop superstar Taylor Swift also announced that her one-year-old mobile app called The Swift Life is ending. Last December, the apps and websites of Kim Kardashian and her sisters Khloe, Kourtney, and Kylie went offline.
