Previously, iPhone users could only use Apple Maps as their default navigation app. Now, Google has a surprise for iOS users in the European Union (EU).
This time, they could now use Google Maps as their go-to tool for hunting places, restaurants, and other landmarks.
Google Maps as Default Navigation App, But Only in the EU
If you browse your iOS settings, you will notice that Google Maps is already listed as an option as a default navigation app—but only if you're living in the EU. According to the German tech website Macerkopf, instead of opting for Apple Maps, iPhone owners could now select Google Maps for opening web addresses.
This adjustment is part of a string of updates mandated by the European Union, giving users more freedom to select their desired apps. Apple has made the option to switch default apps available to all users worldwide, but setting Google Maps as the default navigation app is still only available to EU users.

WhatsApp Also Joins the Customization Movement
Notably, this update mirrors one by WhatsApp, as per 9to5Mac. More recently, iPhone users have been allowed to make WhatsApp their default app for calls and messages, further empowering them over their communication choices.
iOS 18.4 Brings New Customization Options
The ability to change default navigation apps comes with iOS 18.4, which is expected to roll out to the public soon. In addition to navigation apps, iPhone users can now choose default apps for a variety of other functions, including:
- Email Clients
- Web Browsers
- Call and Text Apps
- Translation and Password Managers
- Payment Options
To access these settings, users can go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps.
How to Set Google Maps as Your Default Navigation App
To make Google Maps your default app, do the following:
- Get the latest version from the App Store.
- Go to your iOS settings and scroll down to "Apps."
- Set Google Maps as the default navigation app.
Indeed, this is a game-changer for iPhone users in the EU who want Google Maps instead of Apple Maps. Google Maps has more detailed directions, real-time traffic information, and complete location data, and is a go-to choice for millions of people.
