Nike takes the futuristic vibe of its Huarache model a step further by making a new version with the brand's self-lacing FitAdapt technology.
Sneakerheads may recall that Nike Huarache hit the shelves nearly 30 years ago in 1991. However, while the form and function of the newly introduced version may be inspired by the original shoe, the technology is on a whole new level.
With the new Huarache, the company saves its customers the time and effort it takes to keep re-lacing their shoes for various environments and conditions.
Nike Brings FitAdapt Technology To Huarache
The new Nike Adapt Huarache is fitted with the brand's FitAdapt lacing technology, which allows the shoe to conform and evolve as the wearer moves throughout the day.
According to Nike, the Huarache's FitAdapt self-lacing system runs from a midfoot motor and is controlled by the Nike Adapt app. The app, which is accessible on smartphones, features a couple of preset fit recommendations based on each individual's specific foot type and activity.
For people on the move, the app can also be accessed — and subsequently, the shoelaces controlled — with Siri and the Apple Watch.
Not only does FitAdapt breathe new life into the beloved Huarache lineup, but it also gives both performance and lifestyle Nike users the utmost comfort without having to require constant adjustment of the shoe.
"It propels Nike FitAdapt into the fast-paced, quick-shifting world of the everyday athlete — offering the personalized comfort needed in, say, the sprint to catch the bus, before seamlessly shifting fit as you settle into an empty seat with a sigh of quiet relief," the company said.
The Nike Adapt Huarache is slated for release on SNEAKR, SNEAKRS, and select retailers on Friday, Sept. 13. It's expected to start off with a retail price of $349.
More About Nike's Self-Lacing Tech
While Nike's motorized lacing system is expected to make adjustments more convenient on the go, it's not meant to analyze the user's movements and control itself. It simply allows the user to control their shoelace fit remotely through the app.
This is not Nike's first foray into self-lacing shoes. Nike's basketball shoes Adapt BB already featured the company's technology and allowed control with the use of the smartphone.
However, the Adapt Huarache takes it another step further and makes control even easier with its connectivity to Siri and Apple Watch. Now, users can simply "ask" the virtual assistant and smartwatch to switch between presets, from a relaxed fit during the movies to a snugger grip while working out.
During a SXSW panel earlier this year, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield explained that the company is pursuing the FitAdapt technology to help keep athletes protected with an adaptive shoe fit. It is also expected to help people with dexterity issues, such as arthritis and Parkinson's, enjoy the best products available to the rest of the market.
