Blackmagic Design has just unveiled the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, a compact digital camera capable of shooting in Super 35 format.
The new camera is an improved version of Blackmagic's Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, which could only take images in 1080p. The 6K camera, on the other hand, has an effective resolution of 6,144 x 3,456. It also has a 5-inch touchscreen display similar to its earlier iteration.
6K Camera Features
The Super 35 format allows users to capture high-quality images even in low-light environment. It also offers better control when taking pictures with depth of field.
The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K ditches the Micro Four Thirds featured on its 4K counterpart and opts for Canon's Electro-Focus (EF) lens instead. Canon pioneered the lenses in the late 1980s, using a built-in motor in the lens to give its SLR cameras automatic focusing.
Blackmagic also gave its 6K camera a dynamic range of up to 13 stops, as well as dual native ISO of 400 and 25,600. It saves all image files in Blackmagic RAW format as a default.
The new Pocket Cinema Camera supports multiple connectivity formats. It has provisions for USB-C, full-size HDMI, and mini XLR. It also has ports for DC power, headphone output, and microphone input.
Video Support And DaVinci Resolve Studio
As far as video capture goes, the 6K camera can film 50 fps videos at 6,144 x 3,456 16:9, 60 fps videos at 6,144 x 2,560 2.4:1, and 120 fps videos at 2.8K 2,868 x 1,512 17:9. It features 3D Lookup Tables (LUTs) and profession audio support and has built-in mics.
Both the 4K and 6K cameras come with Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve Studio, a color correction and non-linear video editing app. The software is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux OS.
4K camera owners who want to transfer their image files to their new 6K camera can easily timesync both devices as well.
Pricing
The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K is now available for $2,495, which makes it quite affordable for a Super 35-capable cinema camera. The Canon EOS C100 Mark II costs around $3,500, while the Canon EOS C200 EF Cinema Camera fetches around $7,000.
Meanwhile, Blackmagic still offers the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K model at $1,295.
The 6K camera is also set to receive an update for its OS 6.6 software in a couple of weeks following its release.
