OnePlus' forthcoming phones will officially be unveiled on May 14, but the company has now sort of confirmed that the larger model, OnePlus 7 Pro, will boast a triple-camera system on the back.
A recent video OnePlus shared on Twitter shows the outline of a phone with three cameras on the back. The company has never release a triple-camera phone, so it's safe to assume this is the OnePlus 7 Pro — it even comes with the hashtag #OnePlus7Pro, suggesting this might be limited to the Pro model only.
The outline in the video matches up with renders of the OnePlus 7 Pro, as well, so this might be as good a confirmation as any.
New Display Technology
Aside from a triple-camera system, OnePlus also teased that the Pro model will have a breakthrough screen technology that apparently has to be seen to be believed. "Breakthrough" might be pushing it, though. Most publications speculate the rumored display is simply one with a 90 Hz refresh rate, which is nothing new — both Razer and Asus already have phones featuring this technology.
OnePlus 7 Pro Triple-Camera System
Going back to the cameras, it's not clear what exactly the setup is going to look like if it's indeed a triple-camera system. OnePlus might go with the standard, telephoto, and ultra-wide camera trio as many others have. Alternatively, one of the lenses might be a depth sensor, something OnePlus has implemented before. A depth sensor helps the main cameras recognize, well, depth, to capture portrait shots with a better, more natural-looking bokeh effect around the subject.
As The Verge notes, OnePlus needs to refresh its approach to cameras after using essentially the same hardware in both the OnePlus 6 and 6T last year. OnePlus certainly had some processing improvements on the software side with the latter device, but the hardware was virtually identical.
As it stands, OnePlus isn't a brand necessarily known for excellent image quality. OnePlus phones take great pictures, certainly — but they're no match for top cameras in the market right now. What OnePlus is known for is making flagship-level phones at very inexpensive price points, but that's becoming less and less true each year. For example, these new devices are expected to cost the same as contemporary flagship devices.
