The Emmy Awards, hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost, took an interesting turn when Glenn Weiss proposed to his girlfriend while accepting his award.
Weiss received the award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special around an hour and a half into the awards show. During his speech, he started talking about his late mother who passed away just two weeks before the awards night.
He mentioned that his mother would want him to pay attention to the bright things in his life. It was his time when he turned to his girlfriend whom he considered as his "sunshine."
"You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend?" Weiss asked.
"Because I want to call you my wife," he stated sweetly.
Svendsen then joined him the director onstage as he offered her a ring. His fiancée cried and nodded. This made the crowd explode into an applause.
When the director was asked what his other plan was when he did not win, he answered reporters that he had no plan B. If the proposal did not push through during the awards night, he said something that is equally as surprising would have happened.
He even joked about waiting until next year or propose during the Governor's ball, or at their go-to place after any awards show, In-N-Out Burger.
Typically, the award is presented during the Daytime Emmy Awards. However, it was awarded this year on Primetime Emmy Awards. When asked whether or not Weiss planned it with the showrunners, he replied that he did not inform Hamish Hamilton, the Emmy director, about his plan.
He and Hamilton were notably both nominated to receive an award. He also thanked Hamilton for taking his cue and pointing the camera at his fiancée so they could replay the magical moment after.
Weiss and Svendsen met each other in 2001. The director has two daughters, and his soon to be wife has three. The two became colleagues for a decade and even worked with each other on the Tonys.
According to him, their lives have revolved around awards show environment since they came together because of the Tonys. The two planned to spend their special night hitting parties.
"I think we're going to celebrate. Probably it's going to be a long night," he said.
Furthermore, people on social media also had things to say for the over the top proposal. Some people even joked about being invested so much in a couple whom they did not know until the awards show.
