'The Last Of Us Part II' Rumors: 2 Timelines, No Joel, And Multiplayer Mode

The Last of Us Part II was a big part of the PlayStation 4 E3 2018 showcase held this week.

However, not everything about the game was revealed at the annual video game event, allowing rumors to fill the gaps in information.

The Last of Us Part II is the highly anticipated sequel to 2013's The Last of Us. The game is one of the PlayStation 4 exclusives that Sony focused on for E3 2018, alongside Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, and Spider-Man.

2 Timelines For 'The Last of Us Part II'

The The Last of Us Part II gameplay trailer showed a good glimpse of how players will control Ellie in the game, but the story remains mostly a mystery, lesbian kiss and all.

However, in an E3 2018 panel, co-game director Neil Druckmann provided a hint at how the story of The Last of Us Part II will play out. Druckmann referred to the two timelines that were featured in Left Behind, a three-hour add-on to The Last of Us that focused on Ellie, and said that is "an intriguing way" of telling a story.

"At least in this demo, you're seeing two times of where the story takes place," said Druckmann, "and maybe that expands further."

If The Last of Us Part II jumps between two timelines, developer Naughty Dog will have a lot of space to work with for the game's story.

Is Joel Playable In 'The Last of Us Part II'?

Meanwhile, at a closed-doors presentation of The Last of Us Part II at E3 2018, Naughty Dog suggested that Joel, the main character of the first game, will not be playable in the sequel.

The rumor does not necessarily mean that Joel will not be seen at all throughout the course of the game, as he was seen in the announcement trailer that was released at PlayStation Experience 2016. However, coinciding with the rumor that the game will have two timelines, it is possible that Joel is already dead in the later timeline, and will only be seen in flashbacks.

'The Last of Us Part II' Multiplayer Mode

The Last of Us Part II will have a multiplayer mode, co-game director Anthony Newman confirmed to Polygon at E3 2018.

Newman, however, said that details on for The Last of Us Part II multiplayer will be revealed at a later date. That information, along with details on the release date of The Last of Us Part II, will likely come within the year, as Days Gone, another zombie-infested PlayStation 4 exclusive, is delayed to 2019.
