Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9 Plus Deliver The Fastest Download Speeds

Ookla, a global leader in mobile data speed analysis, crowns the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus as the fastest smartphones in the market.

According to Ookla's figures, the Samsung flagship defeated the iPhone X in terms of download speed.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Handsets Hailed As Fastest Smartphones

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus can reach download speeds that are up to 42 percent faster than other flagships. According to Samsung's press release, its flagships are faster by 17% than Google Pixel 2 and 37% faster than the iPhone X. The 2018 phones were also compared to its 2016 predecessors, which are 38% slower than the new iterations.

"This summer, consumers are going to be on the road, at the beach, and relying on their phones more than ever, but without the latest and fastest network technology that's available in the Galaxy S9 and S9+, their phones may quite literally slow them down," says Justin Denison, Senior Vice President of Mobile Phone and IOT Product Marketing at Samsung.

"At Samsung, we're constantly innovating and developing products that set the new standard for the industry. Our Galaxy owners never need to worry about whether they're getting the best possible experience from their phone."

How Samsung's Tech Compares To Other Flagships

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are fitted with CAT 18 4G LTE modem, which is Qualcomm's X20 modem to be more specific. Samsung credits its fast download speeds to this "most innovative technology" that allows up to 1.2 Gbps network speeds, whereas the iPhone X's X16 modem has a 1 Gbps cap.

Google Pixel 2's modem also has a lower maximum download speed, but that may soon change when a successor comes equipped with the Snapdragon 845 SoC, including the X20 modem.

Other Android flagships this 2018 are also sporting this processor, such as the Sony Xperia XZ2 and LG G7 ThinQ. Chinese smartphone OnePlus 6 is also arriving with the newest Snapdragon processor, and it may hold a candle to the South Korean flagship if it remains as a "flagship killer."

It is yet unknown how these phones compare to the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in terms of download speed. Nonetheless, Samsung is taking this opportunity to include Ookla's figures in its ad campaign and to brag about the high-performance features of its flagships. This week, Samsung is releasing a TV commercial, called "Moving On," highlighting a woman's transition to the Samsung flagship and never looking back.
