Disney announced Star Wars Resistance, a new animated series that will explore what happened before the events of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
Star Wars Rebels ended with a bang, but it left a hole among Star Wars fans who were always looking forward to the next show in that series. Star Wars Resistance will be looking to fill that void, with a story that focuses on a time in Star Wars lore that has not yet been explored.
'Star Wars Resistance': What Do We Know About It?
On the official Star Wars website, Disney announced that production has already started on Star Wars Resistance, an anime-inspired series that will premiere in the fall on the Disney Channel.
Star Wars Resistance will take place in the years before the First Order completed the Starkiller base, doing for Episodes 7 to 9 what Star Wars Rebels did for Episodes 4 to 6. The animated series will focus on a young pilot named Kazuda Xiono, who was recruited by the Resistance and given the mission to spy on the First Order.
Xiono is a newcomer to the franchise, but there will be some familiar faces in the animated series. Included in the cast are Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, who will be voiced by Oscar Isaac and Gewndoline Christie themselves, as well as the lovable droid BB-8.
Star Wars Resistance will look at the early days of the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa, as well as the formation of the First Order. Everything will be seen in the eyes of Xiono, similar to how Star Wars Rebels was shown through the perspective of Ezra Bridger.
Speed will also apparently be a fixture in Star Wars Resistance.
"There's a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we've captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time," said Lucasfilm Animation veteran Dave Filoni.
Questions That 'Star Wars Resistance' Might Answer
In The Force Awakens, Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma already had established roles with the Resistance and the First Order. Star Wars Resistance may be looking at how Poe Dameron acquired his title as the best pilot in the Resistance and how Captain Phasma rose up the ranks in the First Order.
Star Wars Resistance may also feature expanded roles and back stories for some characters in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Characters who would benefit from extended screen time would include Lor San Tekka from The Force Awakens, DJ from The Last Jedi, and Snoke, whose identity is still shrouded in mystery.
