Sony PlayStation Plus subscribers in North America received 71 free games for 2014, worth a total of $1,349.
This shows that membership in PlayStation Plus is a true bargain, as the membership fee for a whole year only costs $49.99.
Push Square collected the data regarding the free games that PlayStation Plus subscribers received over the whole year for the optional subscription.
Membership in PlayStation Plus provides gamers with PlayStation 4 online multiplayer capabilities, cloud storage for saved game data, discounts for certain games, access to the Tune In radio, and the free games that are released monthly for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Membership also turns on the Share Play feature, which allows friends to play the same games online even when only one has a copy of the title.
Push Square's comprehensive report detailed the games that were released for free under the PlayStation Plus membership in both North America and Europe. The prices of the games were added up to show how much PlayStation Plus subscribers were getting in terms of value monthly.
The most valuable month of free games was back in February, when PlayStation Plus members received free copies of Metro: Last Night, Remember Me, Payday 2, Street Fighter X Tekken, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, and Outlast, which has been one of the most successful indie games for the year. The total value of the free games came in at $183.44.
The least valuable month of free games was recently in November, as the lineup included the controversial The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. The total value of the free games for the month was "only" $79.94, with the rest of the lineup composed of Steamworld Dig, Luftrausers, Escape Plan, and The Hungry Horde. The value, however, is still more than what PlayStation Plus members paid for the whole year.
The focus is on the value of the free games, and in addition, the titles are not bad ones at all. The average Metacritic score for the games that were released for free in North America stood at a very respectable 79.
The free offerings for the PlayStation 4 throughout the year revolved around indie games. December proved to be different though, as Injustice: Gods Among Us became the first retail game to be offered for free to PlayStation 4 owners.
Sony reported at the company's recently held earnings call in October that there were 7.9 million PlayStation Plus subscribers. With reports like this, however, that number could still unsurprisingly increase.
