A lot of people may think of Minecraft as just a simple game about digging holes, but time and time again, the Minecraft community proves just how creative and dedicated it is. You won't get far recreating an entire fictional continent with tiny blocks if your heart's not in it, and the size and scale of some of these projects are unbelievable.
On top of that, the PlayStation just celebrated its 20th birthday (has it really been that long?), and to celebrate, the French site Jeaux Video held a contest to honor Sony's long-running console in the blocky mining simulator. The winners were just announced, and the four selections are some of the biggest, most detailed builds since Minecraft launched.
Ratchet and Clank:
Ratchet and Clank are two of the best heroes that PlayStation has in its lineup, so it makes perfect sense that the duo would be represented during the contest. The build is absolutely immense, yet still intricately detailed - it's easy to see why it was chosen.
inFamous:
There are plenty of cityscapes built in Minecraft, but few feature the level of detail in the inFamous: Second Son world...and that's only a single section of the entry. It couldn't have been easy to time the filming of that forest while it was on fire, but it goes a long way to making the build feel unique and epic at the same time.
Uncharted 3:
It'd be easy to assume that an Uncharted build would be nothing more than a big forest, right? While that might be true of other maps, the Uncharted map on display here is rife with little details: ruins, interiors and even the train that kick-started the second game are all included here.
God of War:
It doesn't get much more epic than Kratos, and the God of War build featured here lives up to the demigod's reputation. A number of famous locales from the games are all faithfully recreated, and having a giant winged Kratos to cap everything off is a perfect touch.
These four builds are easily some of the best out there, and with any luck, these teams will continue to create more awe-inspiring work. It feels like this is partially what Minecraft was built for in the first place, and there's never been a birthday celebration quite like this.
