The first Batmobile from the 1960s went up for auction recently, and now we can confirm that it has been sold. We should point out that the first Batmobile was not the one highlighted in the Batman TV series in 1966 nor the first Batman movie.
This Batmobile was created back in 1963 by Forrest Robinson, who was 23 years old at the time. The car was a custom job and built with a 1956 Oldsmobile frame and a unique body created by Robinson. The car was later licensed by a company called All-Star Dairies, an Ice Cream company who needed the Batmobile for promotional purposes.
After the end of the license agreement, Robinson chose to sell his Batmobile, and from there it went abandoned for the next 50 years. The car was later found and restored to what it looks like today. We must say that the guys who restored it did an excellent job because it was a total mess before. A lot of money was spent on it, but how much exactly was not revealed.
The auction for this particular Batmobile began on Nov. 17 and came to an end on Dec. 6. From what we understand, the Batmobile was sold for $137,000. That's not a lot to some, but it is significant considering how much it cost Robinson to build it in the 60s.
The 1966 Batmobile, however, was sold for $4.2 million. The reason for this is because the '66 Batmobile was featured on the TV Show, which means it was more significant and it was the property of DC. Furthermore, some people even considered it to be the first Batmobile, mainly because the 1963 vehicle did not figure in any TV show or movies.
What will happen to the '63 Batmobile?
Well, we guess the new owner won't be driving it around since it is vintage. Chances are, this beautiful thing will be kept locked away in a dungeon somewhere to keep the dangers of the world from ripping it to shreds.
