Sony's big "PlayStation Experience" event is coming up in a few days in Las Vegas. It's happening in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation brand, but of course the PS4 is getting heavy billing.
A teaser trailer has leaked online for something Sony intends to unveil on Friday, December 5, 2014 called Emagon. The 1-minute video was posted to PlayStation Spain's YouTube account, where fans were surprised to find it when it hasn't been posted in English or any other language yet. (That will probably happen soon, now that the cat's out of the bag.)
Translated, the description under the video reads: "Uncover PlayStation's best kept secret." If that's not tantalizing enough for you, here's a translation of the voiceover:
20 years. It's a lot of time.
Look around you and look at all you have accomplished.
You have reigned in infinite places. You have conquered and liberated. You have built and destroyed. You have been the light against the dark.
This time is different though. This time it is real. For the first time your actions have real consequences.
They need your help. I know you can hear them. The power to make a change is in your hands.
So... we've got "PlayStation's best kept secret." We've got actions with "real consequences," which suggests an open world, possibly a massively-multiplayer one, that's alive and changes based on how you interact with it. It could even indicate a game with some kind of real-world content. (The fact that Emagon is "no game" spelled backwards could be emblematic of this.) And then there's the veiled references to PS hits of yesteryear. Couple that with the significance of this being announced during PlayStation's 20th anniversary, and something big is clearly afoot.
The video itself offers a few clues. It's set entirely in a so-real-it's-almost-surreal looking forrest. The on-screen character uses a very cool-looking compass at one point, which hints at a game in which exploration is a major component. A user interface can be seen as well as the game's logo, both of which emphasize a green leaf. That connotates a direct connection between the player and the land, aka an open world.
But just when the video reaches the height of its ultra-realism, it gives way to the distant sight of a city with a distinct fantasy appearance, not unlike something you'd see in a Final Fantasy game.
The opening of the video shows that Emagon is being created internally, by Sony Computer Entertainment. There's not been a whisper of whatever this is anywhere, so it's a secret they've managed to keep all throughout its development, which is mighty impressive in this day and age.
So just what is Sony up to here? It looks like an adventure/exploration game, but is it a new IP? (It looks like something The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog could have come up with. Or maybe Kojima.) Or an unannounced sequel? What are its ties to PlayStation's history? Are they reviving PlayStation at Home in an ultrarealistic open world setting? Is it an experiential title akin to Journey? Could it be Uncharted 4? Or The Last Guardian at long last?!
Post your theories below and stay tuned as we discover the secrets behind Emagon.
