'Titanfall: Frontline' Canceled After Closed Beta: Here's Why The Spin-Off Mobile Card Game Was Shut Down

Titanfall: Frontline, the planned mobile digital card game spin-off for the popular Titanfall franchise, has been canceled after the release of its closed beta version.

The game, which was meant to launch for the iOS and Android last year alongside Titanfall 2, was announced in September 2016.

What Titanfall: Frontline Would Have Been

Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment created a partnership with publisher Nexon and mobile game developer Particle City for Titanfall: Frontline, which was meant to have players assume roles as commanders and fight against other players in real-time card-based combat.

There were hundreds of Titan, Pilot, and Burn cards planned for Titanfall: Frontline, with players able to upgrade the cards to improve their chances of winning matches. The cards can be used in combination with one another, such as having Titan cards in auto-mode provide cover for attacking Pilot cards, and each player can customize their squad according to their preferred style.

The mobile game was described as "unapologetically intense and utterly Titanfall" by Larry Pacey, the co-founder of Particle City, and Nexon general manager Lawrence Koh said that it will feature a layer of strategy that has never before been seen in digital card games.

Games who were looking forward to Titanfall: Frontline as another title in the action-packed Titanfall franchise, however, will be disappointed to know that the project has been shelved.

Titanfall: Frontline Shut Down

In a post on the official Facebook page for the mobile game, it was stated that Titanfall mobile games still aimed to showcase Titans and the fast-paced action that has characterized the franchise.

However, while the closed beta test of Titanfall: Frontline gave the partners for the game considerable learnings, they felt that the digital card game was not ready to deliver the "intense action-packed gameplay" that has been synonymous with the Titanfall franchise. As such, the decision to cancel the project was made.

Apparently, it was difficult to transfer the feeling of Titanfall's fast-paced gameplay into a mobile digital card game.

The servers of the closed beta of Titanfall: Frontline will be shut down on Jan. 20, so players who are part of the testing will only have less than a week left to try out the game.

Future Titanfall Mobile Games

It was, however, stated that some of the concepts that closed beta players liked would be utilized for future mobile Titanfall games, so not all is lost from Titanfall: Frontline.

The partnership between Respawn, Nexon, and Particle City is not only for Titanfall: Frontline, as it spans multiple years and covers different mobile game projects. As such, fans of Titanfall should expect to hear about more mobile games based on the franchise in the future, though hopefully with different results from the canceled Titanfall: Frontline.

In the meantime, players can spend their time on Titanfall 2, released for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC last year. Reviews on the game have been mixed, but it still captures and improves upon the unique gameplay experience of the original Titanfall.

The first free DLC for Titanfall 2, entitled Angel City's Most Wanted, was launched on Nov. 30, 2016.
