Attention, all aspiring mobile game developers looking for a less expensive way to learn how to code! Humble Bundle and APress are offering a variety of instructional game development digital books for a limited time at a price of, er, "pay what you want."
Code Your Own Games
In August, Humble Bundle offered a variety of books on coding in different programming languages under "The Joy of Coding" book bundle.
But the current "Code Your Own Games" book bundle is focused on game development books and covers game programming guides for iOS, Android, Swift, UnityScript, and many more.
Of course, the higher you pay, the more titles are unlocked.
Start off with a $1 payment to unlock five titles, including "Swift Game Programming for Absolute Beginners" and "Learn Pixi.js: Create Great Interactive Graphics for Games and the Web," which are both helpful materials for those who have to start from scratch.
$8 or more would unlock books on making RPG games using RPG Maker; developing arcade games using Unity; coding in HTML5, JavaScript and WebGL to make your own game engine and web-based games; and using Swift to develop games and applications for iOS.
Those who want to go the extra mile may want to pay $15 or more to get "Polished Game Development: From First Steps to Final Release" and learn to code Python and Pygame for arcade games, among other more advanced books.
Collectively, $474 worth of books are currently available in the "Code Your Own Games" bundle, so it is a good deal for those who want to start bringing their imagined games to life. More books will be added in the $8 or more category on Dec. 21, and those who pay more than the average price will automatically receive the additional books.
The good news is that you don't need extra space at home since the books come in different file formats and support various ebook readers so you can have everything in one device.
Proceeds Go To Charity
The other good news is that proceeds of the sales will go to three charities chosen by APress, but you get to choose which among the National Videogame Museum, Girls Who Code, and Maker Ed (via the Tides Foundation) will get your payment. Buyers can also choose a different foundation altogether from either Humble Bundle's list of charities or by giving the details of your chosen charity to PayPal. It will then be sent through the PayPal Giving Fund.
The "Code Your Own Games" Humble Book Bundle ends on Dec. 28.
