Sonic the Hedgehog was first released back in June 23, 1991. The first games in the franchise were side-scrolling platformers but the succeeding titles went on to expand into other genres like fighting, role-playing, racing, sports and action-adventure.
There are now 36 Sonic the Hedgehog video games across platforms, the most recent of which is Sonic Runners, an endless runner for Android and iOS devices. Sonic Runners was launched in 2015 but unfortunately met mixed reviews from critics. Sega announced in May of this year that the game's servers will be shutting down in July.
