What does the Star Wars parody film Spaceballs by Mel Brooks have in common with Christopher Nolan's upcoming science-fiction epic Interstellar? Absolutely nothing, except that they both take place in space.
But that one common thread is apparently more than enough for The Unusual Suspect on YouTube to create a Spaceballs trailer done in the style of Interstellar. It's actually kind of impressive. If you've never actually seen Spaceballs his accomplishment might be lost on you, but if you have seen it, prepare to be amazed.
The trailer somehow takes a movie that is goofy beyond all reason and, almost as if by magic, makes it appear as if Spaceballs is the most important piece of thought-provoking science-fiction cinema since 2001: A Space Odyssey. That's no easy feat, considering Spaceballs features characters like Pizza the Hut, Dark Helmet, Captain Lone Starr and Yogurt. It's also based on Star Wars, which, while perfectly enjoyable, isn't exactly the most sophisticated piece of science-fiction ever created.
Turning something inherently silly into dramatic was the Unusual Suspect's intention with the project after all, and in the video description he says it was quite the challenge. Interstellar's musical score goes a long way towards elevating some of the Spaceballs dialogue, but if a person watching didn't have any idea of what Spaceballs actually was, they might be tricked into believing it's a serious film.
