Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is shrouded in secrecy, much like all of his films before they arrive in theaters. All we really know about the plot is that it centers on a man named Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, who's called upon to venture further into space than mankind has ever gone before, on a mission to somehow save us all. It seems that the planet's natural resources are fading fast, but how venturing into space is expected to save humanity was not known. Until now.
A new minute-long TV spot finally reveals just what it is Cooper and his team are looking for way out there, and it's not a miracle cure for a dying planet. They're looking for a new home world for all of mankind.
"Your daughter's generation will be the last to survive on Earth," Michael Caine's character tells McConaughey's Cooper. "Find us a new home."
So there it is. The situation on Earth in the very near future is so dire that the only remaining option to save mankind is to transplant the entire population to another world. Doesn't sound like the easiest of undertakings for a time when they're not much more technologically advanced than we are today.
Seems like a long shot, don't you think? But what are movies for if not to take us to new places and show us that sometimes the impossible is possible?
Interstellar launches November 7, 2014.
