Apple Offers Deep Discounts On USB Type-C Accessories After MacBook Pro Changes Draw Heavy Criticism

The MacBook Pro stirred quite some controversy over its lack of ports, requiring users to shell out more cash for cables and adapters.

While it's packed with high-end specs and features, the MacBook Pro is already quite expensive and spending even more on accessories because Apple changed everything drew heavy criticism from users.

For those unfamiliar with the matter, the new MacBook Pro features only USB Type-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, which means that most peripherals currently in use need adapters to work with Apple's latest laptop.

The company highlights that the MacBook Pro is its most powerful notebook ever and uses USB-C with Thunderbolt 3, the most advanced industry-standard connector, to maximize performance, compatibility and expandability. While USB Type-C will eventually become the standard for the vast majority of devices, however, it's not quite there yet and people need options for now.

In an effort to appease disgruntled customers, Apple has now cut the price of a number of USB Type-C accessories to go with its MacBook Pro.

"We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition," Apple reckons in a statement to TechCrunch. "We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem."

Consequently, the company has applied heavy discounts on all USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, as well as Apple USB-C adapters and cables. The new prices will be in effect until the end of the year.

Effective immediately, all Apple USB-C adapters and some USB-C cables will drop between $6 and $20 off their normal price tag, as follows:

    - Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter now costs $29 instead of $49
    - USB-C to traditional USB adapter now costs $9 instead of $19
    - USB-C to Lightning cable, 1 meter in length, now costs $19 instead of $25
    - USB-C to Lightning cable, 2 meters in length, now costs $29 instead of $35
    - Multiport adapter with VGA, USB and USB-C now costs $49 instead of $69
    - Multiport adapter with HDMI, USB and USB-C now costs $49 instead of $69

Apple is also slashing roughly 25 percent off the price of all the third-party USB-C peripherals it sells. The USB-C SD card reader from SanDisk is seeing a heftier price cut, dropping from $49 to $29.

It's worth pointing out, however, that Apple is not applying any discounts to USB-C charging cables. The company doesn't have any plans to start shipping adapters in the box with the MacBook Pro.

The newly discounted MacBook Pro accessories are available now from Apple's physical and online stores.
