Attention PC gamers: copies of the Windows 10 version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare purchased from the Windows Store are not compatible for cross-platform play with copies of the game purchased from Steam or for the Xbox One.
Microsoft platforms provide support for cross-play, but with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare not being an Xbox Play Anywhere game, the multiplayer communities between the different versions will not be able to interact with one another.
You Can Only Play With Other Windows 10 Users
The limitation is found in the FAQ page of the game's official website. On the question on whether gamers can play the Windows Store version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare with their friends who are on another PC platform or on the Xbox One, the answer is a definite no. Gamers playing the Windows Store version of the shooter will only be allowed to play with friends who have the same version of the game.
The limitation also applies to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which requires Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in order to be played.
Microsoft Or Activision To Blame?
According to a statement released by Microsoft, the company supports cross-play between platforms and devices for partner video game companies who would like to enable the feature. This hints that it was Activision's decision to place the limitation on the Windows Store version, a claim that was confirmed by a source of Windows Central, but the reasoning behind such a move remains unknown.
Unfortunately, there is no workaround to make the Windows Store version support cross-platform play. For PC gamers looking forward to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, the only solution would be to stay away from purchasing the game on the Windows Store and instead buy it from Steam.
The popularity of the Call of Duty franchise on the PC is not as high compared to consoles, which means that the number of gamers who will buy the game through the Windows Store will be minimal. With gamers to buy the title from other services, the multiplayer community of the Windows Store version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will likely turn out to be a really small one.
In the middle of October, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare saw its beta version for the PlayStation 4 extended by a day, giving gamers extra time to enjoy the new mode named Gun Game.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is launching this weekend, and for those who will be purchasing the PlayStation 4 Slim in participating retailers on Nov. 4 or Nov. 5, a copy of the game will be given for free.
