After the first-look trailer for the Greek civilization in the upcoming Civilization VI, Firaxis Games has followed up with another one that reveals a second Greek leader, Queen Gorgo.
Renowned for her good counsel, wisdom and upkeep of Spartan values, she's the wife of King Leonidas I, infamous for leading 300 Spartans to their demise — cue the iconic referral to the cinematic version. Gorgo's reveal is twofold, also confirming that Civilization VI will feature more than one leader for every civilization, unlike the previous title, which only supported one leader per civilization. Multiple leaders allow players to take advantage of the civilization's strengths in different directions.
Queen Gorgo of Sparta resembles many aspects of Pericles, the other Greek leader, but they're inherently different in the methods they enact to gain cultures. Gorgo has a unique leader ability, which allows her to absorb the culture of a defeated enemy unit. The Greek civilization's mainstay is gaining cultures, and Gorgo possesses more latitude for warfare compared to Pericles' more diplomatic approach.
Queen Gorgo reigned the early part of 5th century B.C., one of the few powerful women noted by historian Herodotus, lauding her leadership principles. In that period, applaud for women was almost nonexistent given the astringent misogyny of the climate. A woman who held power in that period was free target for further sexism, making Gorgo's praised leadership a valuable and noteworthy one.
Gorgo gets the Acropolis district and the Hoplite, alongside having Plato's republic ability for extra policy slots. Gorgo offers players a more aggressive approach to playing Civilization as opposed to Pericles' more modest-leaning overthrow. "With Your Shield Or On It" is Gorgo's leader agenda, meaning she seeks glory in combat and will never give up items in the event of a peace deal. She detests civs who surrender and averse to her warlike approach.
Civilization is a turn-based strategy series with the first title released back in 1991. The gameplay involves building a civilization from a prehistoric period up to the near future. Players can choose what technologies to research, affecting the cultural, intellectual and technical innovation inside a civilization. The sixth title carries over Civilization V's hex-based map, alongside game-changing features.
Civilization did not implement multiple leaders, so this feature will cause the delight of many loyalists who are disappointed with its absence on the previous title.
When Civilization VI releases for PC, Linux and Mac on Oct. 21, it will come with 19 civilizations right off the bat. Greece seems to be the only one that features multiple leaders, at least for now. More leaders may come with DLC and expansion packs post-release.
