Outlast fans would have something worthwhile to spend the upcoming Halloween with. Its developer Red Barrels has just announced that the next sequel to the first-person survival thriller is now available for preview and true to its legacy, the game promises more terror and mayhem.
The Outlast 2 preview will come in the form of free demo currently available on Xbox One, PS4, Steam and PC platforms. One should take note that this offer will only last until Nov. 1.
It appears that the sequel is carrying over the original Outlast universe. However, it is introducing new characters and setting. In Outlast 1, the narrative revolves around a journalist caught in the horror of his investigation of a psychiatric hospital. The latest installment will have a couple as protagonists who are also journalists investigating a story. Instead of the hospital, however, they end up in the Arizona desert after following a trail of clues left by a murdered pregnant woman.
Players, through the journalists, Blake Langermann and his wife Lynn, are bound to face Sullivan Knoth and his followers.
"Sullivan Knoth ... left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization," the game's description in the Microsoft Store stated. "Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you're right in the thick of it."
More juicy details about Knoth and his flock are available from several sources and they point to a particularly deranged overweight zealot, perpetuating violence and lurid activities that will surely give the squeamish nightmares. Tech Times, for instance, has previously confirmed this with a story detailing the horror entailed in the gameplay.
The first Outlast title has been widely praised by critics and players alike. The latest version seems destined to follow the same path. As expected, it has thoroughly terrified early birds. Engadget's Jessica Conditt, for instance, found herself shrieking in the middle of the E3 confab while trying the game out for the first time. The demo also got high ratings this early from PC players.
There is no definitive schedule yet for Outlast 2's release. One should also recall that Red Barrels announced that it will be delaying the game's rollout.
"Our mission as an indie studio is to deliver to you the best, most terrifying, most fulfilling experiences possible," the developer posted in its Facebook page.
The expectation, however, is that Outlast 2 will be heading to the Xbox One, PS4 and PC platforms sometime in the first quarter of 2017.
