Verizon Announces Moto G4 Play Prepaid Smartphone With Android 6.0 Marshmallow For $85

While Verizon is planning to release the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus on its network, it has just launched another new smartphone. The carrier is offering the budget Moto G4 Play in its prepaid lineup and has priced it at $84.99.

All four major U.S. wireless carriers are heavily promoting Apple's latest iPhones, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which will be available in stores and make it into the hands of customers who preordered the new iPhones on Sept. 16.

Verizon joined AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in offering its customers a free iPhone 7 when trading in a qualifying smartphone and signing a two-year commitment. It appears the free iPhone 7 deals have contributed to the popularity of the new iPhones, with both Sprint and T-Mobile claiming it's the pair's most successful smartphone launch in history.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus aren't the only new smartphones launching at Verizon right now, as the carrier has just launched the Moto G4 Play.

"Today Verizon announced that the newest player in the Motorola line-up, the Moto G Play prepaid smartphone, is now available on Verizon, the better network. Enjoy your favorite videos and games in vibrant HD, talk all day on a single charge, shoot crisp photos and more with the water-repellent Moto G Play—all on the nation's most reliable 4G LTE network. The Moto G Play is available today online at www.verizonwireless.com and in Verizon retail stores."

The Moto G4 Play is currently sold on Motorola's online store for $149.99, but Verizon has priced the smartphone at $84.99. The handset offers some impressive specs, especially when considering its price. It comes equipped with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 HD display, runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and is expected to receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat. It's powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, Adreno 306 GPU (graphics processing unit), and 2 GB of RAM.

The Moto G4 Play ships with 16 GB of internal storage and microSD expansion slot that supports up to 128 GB microSD cards. The handset includes an 8-megapixel rear camera, which can capture 1080p video at 30fps and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video chat. Motorola has used a special water-repellent nano-coating on the handset's case, which will protect it from accidental spills and rain. It also includes a 2,800 mAh battery, which will provide all-day use according to the carrier.

If you're not looking to spend the high cost of Verizon's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and want a capable smartphone with impressive specs and update to the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, the Moto G4 Play can be yours for $84.99.
