Supernatural adventures are all the rage on television these days with shows like Sleepy Hollow, Grimm and, well, Supernatural gaining big audiences. Now NBC is adding another show to the list by introducing a long-standing DC Comics character to the world of television: the demon-battling Constantine.
You can check out a first look at the show below, filled with clips from the series and insight from John Constantine actor Matt Ryan, along with the show's producers.
Ryan sums up what his character is all about with one sentence: "A con-artist with a wicked sense of humor and a dry wit."
It's for that reason executive David Goyer says Constantine isn't exactly the shining definition of hero.
"The only guy who can save us happens to be the last guy you would ever want to trust," Goyer says in the video.
Constantine isn't a fan of angels and demons meddling in the human world, and while he isn't exactly a knight in shining armor, he does hold "a spark of hope" that drives him. Also there is the whole business of winning back his soul, which he seems pretty stuck on.
While battling demons and being trapped in hell is serious business, judging from the first look the show isn't afraid to have a little fun. Multiple characters poke fun at Constantine's business cards, which label him as an "exorcist and master of the dark arts," after which he sighs and says he is getting new ones made.
The series will be facing some steep competition from other supernatural shows along with television adaptations of other DC Comic properties like Gotham, Arrow and The Flash, but if Constantine manages to provide a balance of fun and drama as the first look implies, it looks like it could find an audience. The show premieres Oct. 24 on NBC.
