An Activision spokesperson responded with the following: "These estimates are highly inaccurate and are not at all representative of actual retail data. We've announced that pre-orders started strong, and continue to be very positive. And we look forward to sharing new gameplay next week at E3."
It's no secret that many are not pleased with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, with rampant complaints and its trailer being among the most disliked YouTube videos in history.
However, while that is one way to measure fan interest in the game, it doesn't necessarily capture the whole picture. For example, those dislikes could be the product of an automated botting campaign or some other form of online shenanigan.
With that in mind, the easiest way to determine just how much a game is (dis)liked is sales. While it differs from title to title, sales are the generally the easiest way to determine the "success" of a game.
According to VG Chartz, which has a tracker for preorder sales (see Activision's response above), you can see that as of May 14, 2016, Infinite Warfare has only 33,014 and 30,455 preorders on the PS4 and Xbox One, respectively. Granted the totals are outdated and there is still quite some time for sales to pick up, they are still a far cry from sales experienced in the past. For example, on May 16, 2015, Black Ops III had 287,509 and 423,456 preorders on the PS4 and Xbox One, respectively.
These two games are perfect for comparison too. Because Black Ops III launched on Nov. 6, 2015, while Infinite Warfare is coming on Nov. 4, 2016, the two-day discrepancy in the tracking is acceptable. However, what that means is that even combined, if those numbers hold true, the Xbox One and PS4 Infinite Warfare preorders don't come close to those seen for either version of BlOps III.
