Flood Wall Street climate change protest ends with arrest of 100 activists

Around 100 protesters were arrested in New York City in a demonstration that is being called Flood Wall Street.

At one point, the demonstration blocked the flow of traffic on streets near the stock exchange in a way of denouncing the contribution of Wall Street to the problem of climate change.

Hundreds of protesters joined the Flood Wall Street movement, which blocked traffic on Broadway for several hours, which is to the south of the New York Stock Exchange.

Right after the close of trading on the stock exchange, the protesters started to push back the metal barricades that were set up by police to keep them away from the building. Shortly afterwards, the police began to use pepper spray on the demonstrators to curb the hostilities.

The police then broke up the demonstration while telling the remaining activists to disband their gathering. However, a group composed of a few dozen protesters staged a sit-in just a few steps away from Wall Street. The police placed the members of the group in handcuffs and escorted them away from the location one-by-one.

Around 100 protesters were arrested in connection with Flood Wall Street, including three that were already arrested earlier that day. The organizers of Flood Wall Street gave a similar estimate on the number of people arrested.

The people that organized Flood Wall Street has their roots in Occupy Wall Street, which is a movement that began in a Manhattan park back in 2011 that protested against unfair banking practices that only served the richest 1 percent of the population.

Flood Wall Street happened just a day after what is now known as the biggest protest ever held against the issue of climate change.

People's Climate March organizers only expected about 100,000 people to join the event. However, the number of participants that joined the march reached over 310,000, as the movement called for leaders all over the world to begin to take significant actions to address the threat of climate change.

The turnout for the Climate March is three times that of the previously largest demonstration held against climate change, which was held in Copenhagen five years ago.

Both Flood Wall Street and the Climate March happened during Climate Week, which aims to create awareness on the threat of carbon emissions and their relationship to climate changes and global warming.

Both events also happen right before the United Nations Climate Summit, where global leaders will discuss the issues and threat relating to the phenomenon.
