Asus VR Headset In The Works: Could It Be Daydream-Ready?

Asus recently took the wraps off a new lineup of smartphones and tablets, including the MacBook challenger ZenBook 3, during its Zenvolution press event at the Computex 2016 on May 30.

However, the mobile devices weren't the only gadgets Asus unveiled at the event. Asus also showed off its virtual reality (VR) headset — albeit quietly. That's correct, Asus has a VR headset in development and gave a peek into the device at the event.

In the demo area, Asus' impending VR headset was on display. The fancy-looking device had the name "Asus VR" as it sat quietly behind the glass display.

All that one can discern from the display is that the VR headset from the company is made of silver metal and has premium-looking leather straps, which are reminiscent of Asus' ZenWatch. The Asus VR also seems to tout a touchpad and some buttons on the device's right side, which would likely be used for navigation.

Engadget did a little bit of research and discovered the Asus VR is "meant to be used in much the same way as the Gear VR, except you'd use it with an ASUS' ZenFone instead."

The headset's configuration looks quite similar to that of the ZTE VR, which is Daydream-ready. Will the Asus VR also be Daydream-compatible you ask? Possibly yes, even though the OEM is yet to disclose any detail on the headset.

The reason why the Asus VR could be Daydream-ready is that it is among the handful of OEMs Google has confirmed will release a smartphone that is compatible with its mobile VR platform.

The company already has the hardware know-how and could deploy it for its VR headset as well. This could potentially be an early prototype of the Asus Daydream-ready VR headset.

With Asus staying mum on the VR headset, we will possibly have to wait a little longer for the company to spill the beans on what plans it has up its sleeve. Perhaps Asus will unveil the VR headset alongside its new Daydream-ready smartphones in the near term.
