DC Comics has unveiled the cast of characters to be expected in DC Universe: Rebirth, a day before the release of its first issue.
Taking to social media for the reveal, DC set up a scavenger hunt that had fans checking out its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, as well as Batman's Facebook page, to see what it had in store. DC also encouraged fans to share their Rebirth photos using the hashtag #DCRebirth.
The cast of characters are featured in a double-page spread illustrated by Joe Prado, Hi-Fi and Ivan Reis that will be appearing at the end of the issue. Some may find the spread reminiscent of works by José Luis García-López or the 2010 campaign "Drawing the Line at $2.99."
Naturally, you'll see Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman front and center, but the cast also includes characters that have returned recently and relatively/entirely new faces, like Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, and New Super-Man Kenan Kong.
"Rebirth is about focusing in on the core of the character and their respective universe," said Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer.
DC Universe: Rebirth # 1 is set to hit stores on May 25, kicking off a line-wide relaunch of titles in the DC Universe. All series will launch with a new #1, except for Detective Comics and Action Comics, which will be following their legacy number that began in 1937 and 1938, respectively.
There's a lot of optimism surrounding the relaunch, so much so that Johns said he's willing to buy back any DC Universe: Rebirth #1 copies from dissatisfied fans.
"I will buy all these books back because I believe in this issue a lot," he said, instructing fans to mail their copies to Warner Bros. addressed to him. Upon receipt, he will send back a check covering the cost of postage to return the book and the book itself.
DC Universe: Rebirth #1 is written by Johns, with a cover by Gary Frank and art by Frank, Reis, Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jimenez and various artists.
