It sucks to be Jack Cooksey.
Unless you've been hanging out on Venus (what? it happens), you know that today, September 19, 2014, is the day Apple's iPhone 6 goes on sale worldwide. Shoppers have been lining up around Apple Stores everywhere to be among the first to get theirs. Some of of the most insane hardcore fans have waiting on-site for days, even weeks.
Jack Cooksey of Perth, Western Australia, was first in line outside his local Apple Store after waiting for hours. The 18-year-old was the first shopper to pass through the store's doors when it opened, and thanks to the time zone system, that effectively made him the first person in the world to get his hands on an iPhone 6. Or at least one of the first, but just go with it and call him the first, okay?
His story should have ended there, his place in history secure. But that's when the unfortunate incident occurred. Brace yourself, this is gonna be ugly. You may have nightmares after this.
Emerging from the store to cheers, glorious gadget in hand, Cooksey was accosted by the local morning news show, Today Perth, for a quick interview. Happy to oblige, he produced the white box holding his new iPhone and proceeded to open it on camera.
Here's an Instagrammer's view of Cooksey's interview.
What you don't see in that photo is that just seconds before, Cooksey dropped his brand new iPhone 6 on the hard cement ground, to an audible cracking sound. The entire crowd cringed and cried out in horror. See for yourself.
That has to be one of the worst sounds of anything ever. Most people wouldn't wish this kind of accident on their worst enemy. Well, maybe their medium enemy.
Happily, Cooksey's iPhone 6 survived its violent encounter with the earth (Apple certainly makes sturdy stuff). The screen even resisted scratches thanks to the clear plastic packaging wrapped around the phone.
But that sound is something you can never unhear.
