Is there a 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' sequel on the horizon?

Despite having brought in an impressive $232 million -- with a filming budget of $90 million -- when it came out in 2011, the popular english version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" has yet to see any sequel.

The movie, which is based on the highly popular Stieg Larsson Millennium book trilogy, is only one part of a three-part crime mystery saga. In the original book series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is followed by "The Girl Who Played With Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest."

This past weekend however, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" director David Fincher hinted that we just might be seeing a sequel sooner rather than later. The famed director, who is currently promoting another movie based on a book -- Gone Girl -- previously stated that he had no hopes set out for sequels.

More recently however, he concluded that Sony would likely do something with the saga because of the amount of time and money they had spent on obtaining the rights.

"I think because (Sony) has already spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script, it will result in something," he said in an interview with Swedish site Afton Bladet.

The English version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" came out on the heels of the success of the Swedish version, which was released as a full trilogy in 2009.

While the separate Swedish and English versions have created some confusion for viewers, their combined success and ability to draw an international audience into the series is nothing short of remarkable.

Roger Ebert, in his review for the English-language version of the movie, had the following to say when comparing the two:

"I realize most people will be seeing the story for the first time with this version. Because it worked for me, I suspect it will work better for them, because everything will be new. I'm happy to have seen both. If I had a choice of seeing one or the other for the first time, I'd choose the 2009 version. It seems closer to the bone, with a less confident surface. Even the Swedish dialogue adds to the effect; in English, the characters are concealing secrets but not so uncannily concealing themselves."

The storyline for the series follows a technologically savvy woman in her 20s and an investigative journalist who work together to solve complex crime mysteries.

The English-version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig as the main characters. Rooney Mara went on to receive a best actress Oscar nomination for her performance. It is unknown if they will both be returning for a possible sequel.
