Nintendo has been no stranger to information leaks as of late, especially when it comes to the Super Smash Bros. series. The full character roster was leaked online back in late August, while Japanese players began live-streaming the 3DS version of the game last week, several days before its scheduled release.
For the most part, the Wii U version of the game had been relatively safe from these sorts of leaks, but one user seems to have pulled one over on Nintendo.
A post on twitter seems to have outed the final release date for the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., something that Nintendo has held close to its chest for months now. The tweet in question shows a reservation card from Fred Meyer, with a release date of Nov. 21.
The reservation card certainly looks legitimate, and it makes sense that retailers would already have the promotional materials, especially for a release as huge as Super Smash Bros. The original poster, under the alias of BluesDriveBuster, also commented that the cards were previously on display in the store until Nintendo asked that they were taken down.
Super Smash Bros. is one of the biggest releases this year, and not just because people are anxious to play the game. The Wii U has been struggling to find a stable audience, and with Sony and Microsoft providing more than enough competition for Nintendo, the company needs a major success.
Many believe that Super Smash Bros. could be that success, as each entry in the series has managed to push a massive amount of hardware: the GameCube entry, Super Smash Bros. Melee, was the best-selling game on the console. Nintendo needs that sort of win if the Wii U is to succeed in the current console market.
As per usual, Nintendo has declined to comment on the matter, though that doesn't confirm or deny whether or not the information is legitimate. All signs point to the reservation card being real, and the date makes a lot of sense in terms of the typical holiday release schedule.
If the information is indeed correct, players only have a few more months until Super Smash Bros. is on store shelves.
