Kids who are used to high-definition, surround sound and motion control in video games can apparently still appreciate the classics.
A new video from the Fine Bros. shows a group of teens reacting to the original Nintendo Entertainment System. They look at the beige box and the simple controller and marvel at games of a bygone era. After a bit of difficulty getting the game going and using magic breath to get it to run, they dive into Super Mario Bros. The enthusiasm they show solidifies the legendary status and expert design for the famous platform game.
Among the teens in the video is Maisie Williams, the young actress who plays Arya Stark on the "Game of Thrones" television series from HBO. Like the others, she wrestles with the basic game console.
The Nintendo Entertainment System is famous for many reasons. It reinvigorated the home video game industry after the Atari and other 4-bit consoles caused the hobby to crash, due to the multitude of unlicensed, high-priced, poorly made games. The NES was the first game console from Japan that was successful in America and the first from Nintendo, who had previously released individual handheld games under the Game and Watch brand.
The Nintendo console is also an important part for the game industry because it was the starting point for so many game famous franchises. Nintendo, under designer Shigeru Miyamoto, released Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. Other classic series that began on the NES are Mega Man, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior (nee Dragon Quest), Ninja Gaiden and Metal Gear.
The Nintendo Entertainment System was released in July 1983 in Japan, as the Famicom, short for Family Computer. It was released in the United States in October 1985.
