John Romero and Adrian Carmack, co-founders of id Software, which created the Doom and Quake franchises, are back together under Night Work Games as they work on a new first-person shooter titled Blackroom.
The game currently has a crowdfunding campaign up in Kickstarter, with the studio looking to raise an initial goal of $700,000.
With 31 days to go in the campaign, at the time of writing, over 1,200 backers have pledged over $70,000, still well short of the initial goal but still with enough time to reach it.
Gamers are familiar with Doom and Quake, but what is Blackroom all about?
Story
In Blackroom's 10-hour single-player campaign, players take on the role of Dr. Santiago Sonor, the Chief hNode Engineer at HOXAR, which is the company that created the Blackroom. Through the technology, people can be transported to any location through the creation of holographic worlds that are indistinguishable from reality.
However, the company's new predictive memory technology has started to merge with the Blackroom in troubling ways, and it is up to the gamer to investigate the anomalies while surviving the horrors that the Blackroom creates.
Gameplay
At its heart, Blackroom is a fast and violent FPS that will test the skills of players in a variety of game modes, including the single-player campaign and multiplayer modes such as co-op, free-for-all arena and 1-on-1 deathmatch.
In the Blackroom, players will be subjected to different kinds of realities, including Wild West ghost towns, hellish infernos, space levels and abstract surroundings. Using Sonora's skills, players will be able to hack the environments that they are in, with switches, hidden paths and secret rooms abound in every level.
Players will be able to use a variety of moves such as circle strafing, strafe jumping and rocket jumping, along with utilizing a wide array of weapons.
Mods
Romero will be designing all the levels in Blackroom, but the community will also be able to create their own maps. However, modding opportunities extend beyond creating levels, as gamers are also given full mod support with dedicated servers.
Platform And Release Date
Blackroom is being developed for Windows PC and Mac users, with the expected release date to be in the winter season of 2018. Backers that pledge at least $29 will be able to get a digital copy of the game.
