Gaming's continued rise on the mobile platform and improved iPhone 6 ability to process a core game was a part of Apple's huge iPhone launch event Tuesday as Apple summoned developer Super Evil Megacorp to demo Vainglory.
In the veins of games such as Dota 2 and League of Legends, Vainglory is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in which players guide characters with real-time strategy mechanics and a progression system.
Most MOBA and top-down strategy games bypass consoles and release on PCs, where gamers can leverage keyboards and mice for the ultimate in control over the complex games. Super Evil Megacorp says it's bringing an uncompromising, core MOBA game to touch-sensitive devices.
"Vainglory is an unapologetically core MOBA developed by veterans from the likes of Blizzard and Riot," states Super Evil Megacorp. "Built on Super Evil's proprietary E.V.I.L engine and featuring full Metal support via Apple's new iOS from Day One, Vainglory is going to deliver an all-new level of graphics and performance on touch screens."
During Apple's Sept. 9 media event at Cupertino's Flint Center, Tommy Krul and Stephan Sherman, two co-founders for Super Evil Megacorp, took the stage to show off the depth of Vainglory's game play mechanics.
The slice of the match shown at the Apple event revealed that Vainglory bears all of the elements of a traditional MOBA game, though precision controls through touch displays and high fidelity graphics set the game apart from a pack of competitors.
Asserting Vainglory's graphical fidelity on mobile devices can exceed the resolution of Blu-ray, Super Evil Megacorp says it's using the game's visuals and touch controls to change the perception of tablet gaming -- right now, core gamers generally view mobile devices as platforms for casual games.
With its proprietary engine, "Super Evil games deliver console-quality graphics, precision controls and social gameplay experiences not possible with an out-of-the-box tablet engine solution," states Super Evil Megacorp. "There's so much more touch games can be. Super Evil Megacorp wants to help build a future where every tablet is perceived by players as a portable next-gen console, a fully fledged primary gaming device."
Vainglory is slated to begin a staggered release on Apple's App Store in October, heading first to Southeast Asia before moving out into the rest of the world. Super Evil Megacorp says it's avoiding a global launch of the game to minimize regional release issues.
