One book, two book, three book? No, actually four new stories are joining the old collection of Dr. Seuss favorites.
New, long-lost stories hit the shelves from "Cat and the Hat" creator Theodor Geisel, who captured our imagination throughout his books under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss.
Dr. Seuss published 46 children's books before his death in 1991 including "Horton Hears a Who!" in 1954, "The Cat in the Hat" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" in 1957, "Green Eggs and Ham" in 1960 and "The Lorax" in 1971.
The new collection of work includes four short stories that were written back in the 1950s.
Published by Random House, "Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories" features popular characters like Horton and the Grinch but many new characters are introduced in the short story collection, including Kwuggerbug who bullies Horton into bringing him beezlenut treats.
"He climbed and he climbed and he clum and he clum," Dr. Seuss writes, showing that even in his early work, Seuss was not afraid to play with tenses and language. Dr. Seuss fans will be pleased to find the author and illustrator used his signature free-flowing rhyming scheme in the stories.
The lesser-known stories previously appeared six decades ago in Redbook magazine, where he used to write once a week. Cathy Goldsmith with Random House says Seuss would present the weekly stories similar to how children first heard the magical words. "He would gather everybody in a conference room and, first, he would read the words to you aloud, then he would show you the pictures," Goldsmith says.
This is the first time the stories are released in book form. The stories were rediscovered during research by biographer Charles Cohen. Cohen says that because of copyright issues regarding other unpublished Dr. Seuss work, this could be the last lot of "lost" stories that readers can enjoy.
Dr. Seuss' books have been turned into four movies, four television series, 11 television specials and a Broadway musical.
The new collection of stories is available through Random House.
