Star Wars never died, but it does seem like the force is truly having an awakening. In addition to a new TV series, multiple new films and more merchandise than you can possibly buy in your lifetime, it has now been announced that the original Star Wars trilogy will be returning to select theaters this summer for a special event.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is sponsoring screenings of the show at various arthouse venues across the country during the summer of 2016, with more than 20 cities getting the privilege of hosting a back-to-back-to-back screening of the entire original trilogy. If you've never seen the original movies on the big screen (or just want to see them again), you'll soon have your chance.
"It's always been a dream to show the original Star Wars trilogy again — somehow, someway," Alamo Drafthouse's VP of Special Events Henri Mazza says. "Seeing the original trilogy on the big screen for the first time is a real life-altering event and just a supreme amount of fun. When the films became available to book for screenings like these, we jumped at the chance to do something big."
The versions of the films to be screened will be the 1997 re-release versions, the versions famous (or perhaps infamous) for having more than a little needless CGI added after the fact by franchise creator George Lucas.
Tickets will go on sale in most areas on May 4, aka Star Wars day. You can buy tickets over at ReturnOfTheTrilogy.com. Contests and giveaways will go on between screenings of the movies, and various clips and curated content will also be shown.
