Ever since the first official teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropped on April 7, fans have been speculating about who Jyn Erso really is, and one of the more popular fan theories is that she is none other than the mother of Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
It seems many fans are wrong this time around because Daisy Ridley (Rey) debunked that theory herself when she attended the MTV Movie Awards on April 10. Ridley spoke to Josh Horrowitz backstage to discuss a few things about her Star Wars character and where director Rian Johnson will be taking them in Episode VIII.
Ridley addressed the fan theory that Jyn Erso could be the mother Rey has been waiting for in Jakku as they have similar physical features, speaking accents, and they know how to fight well – naturally, because no two unrelated people can look similar, know how to practice self-defense, and have the same speaking accents are genetically linked – and she said that, in spite of all those similarities, it just is not something that would pan out.
"I'm not being funny you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair... it doesn't mean she's my mom," Ridley said.
Besides, Ridley revealed that she already knew who Rey's parents are but that she does not feel that discovering Rey's parentage is necessary to telling her story.
"I think the amazing thing about [Episode VII] is that Finn and Rey don't come from anywhere, and they find a place ... So to me, it's funny that people think it's so important because I don't really think it is," she added.
That also means that despite being Force sensitive, Rey being a Jedi or not is also not the big issue but how she will use The Force in the next two films. Ridley, however, thinks Rey is not a Jedi.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released in 2017.
