Remember that time just after Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out and Rey, the mysterious girl from Jakku who is strong with The Force, suddenly became everyone's daughter or relative? Well, since the official teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released on April 7, another candidate was added to the list and it is none other than Jyn Erso.
It is no wonder fans are so intrigued about Felicity Jones' character because she was the only one whose name was actually uttered in the teaser trailer.
Now basing from the one minute and 40 second trailer alone, fans have begun to speculate about who this one heck of a rebel girl is. There are two new speculations that relate Erso to two The Force Awakens characters, one that believes she might be based off a specific character from the game Star Wars: Dark Forces and its sequels and one that is kind of hoping that she is an entirely new character.
The Force Awakens Connection, The Force Connection Awakens
Alright, take your pick between two theories: Rey's mother or Captain Phasma
Jyn Erso + Mystery Man = Rey
They have similar facial structures, they have similar accents and they are both very skilled when it comes to fending for themselves at a young age. That is basically the premise of the theory that Jyn Erso may actually be the family Rey has been waiting for in Jakku. More specifically, people seem to believe that Jyn could actually be Rey's biological mother, whether born from an affair with a fellow Rebel in the Rogue One timeline or with Luke Skywalker- because the connection with The Force must be established.
Is Jyn Erso Rey's mother? According to the timeline, if she is indeed Rey's mother, then Jyn would have to be around 40 to 50 years of age when she gave birth to Rey. Here on Earth, that would have been a very difficult pregnancy but who knows how pregnancies are in that galaxy far far away.
Jyn Erso + Whatever She Did = Captain Phasma
Yes, you read that right. Some people do seem to think that Erso as the young Captain Phasma is plausible, especially after the trailer showed her wearing an Imperial Pilot's uniform towards the end.
Apparently, people answered the voiceover questions for Jyn and thought that what she would become- if she continues to fight- is Captain Phasma of the Starkiller Base.
There is only one problem we see in this, though. We would either have to believe that Erso found a fountain of youth in one of her missions and decided to drink from it and not tell anyone or Captain Phasma from The Force Awakens timeline is incredible good at using make-up to cover-up her age.
Jyn Erso Is A Game Character Come To Life!
This one is pretty interesting and holds some water. User "RedCaio" asked whether Erso could have been based on the game character Jan Ors.
While Jan Ors was first an Imperial Spy before becoming a member of The Rebellion and there is no indication that Erso follows the same path, there is the rumor that Erso is actually Mads Mikkelsen's character's daughter. It was also speculated that Mikkelsen's character is the person responsible for fixing the flaws of the original Deathstar plans so, if the father-daughter connection is correct, the theory actually make sense.
Jyn Erso Is An Entirely New Character
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is supposed to be a different point of view of the Star Wars films. Specifically, we're talking about the ground war perspective, like Donnie Yen's awesome moves in the teaser trailer or Jyn's assault on stormtroopers. None of the new characters seem to be connected to The Force so there are some who, more than speculate, hope that Rogue One is really taking that perspective instead of establishing some characters only to be an important character's relative in future films because it does weaken a character's value.
