DOTA 2 Is About To Get More Immersive With VR Spectator Mode

Valve's massively popular multiplayer game DOTA 2 is set to receive a VR spectator mode, as teased in a video that was posted to the official SteamVR website.

The website introduces SteamVR through several videos, including ones that showcase different virtual reality games. Among the titles shown are stealth shooter Budget Cuts, zombie survival game Arizona Sunshine and mountain climbing simulation Everest.

One of the teaser videos in the website showed several virtual reality features that will soon be added to some of Valve's most popular games, and DOTA 2 was one of the games highlighted in the video.

The VR spectator mode is shown as having the standard stream of a DOTA 2 match in a screen in front of the user in a virtual reality environment. A 3D minimap of the game is shown in front of users, where they can see the locations of the players.

The characters that the players in the DOTA 2 match being watched are shown as avatars to the left and to the right of the screen, with the avatars showing information such as the items that the player is currently carrying.

Users can also call up different holographs containing various kinds of information related to the match, with the example holographs revealed in the video showing the difference in the net worth of the teams and the difference in experience gained.

DOTA 2 already provides users with deep spectating options, with both amateur and professional matches able to be watched from within the game client. Spectators are also given the freedom to move around their cameras, while being provided with a long list of stats for the match that they are watching.

There is no mention on when the VR spectator mode will launch for DOTA 2 though, but it will surely help its case in boosting popularity against rival multiplayer game League of Legends.

Valve teamed up with HTC for the development of the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, which has just started shipping to customers that preordered the device.
