Sony and Square Enix unveiled the Dragon Quest Metal Slime edition of the PlayStation 4 console at the end of the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia press conference in Tokyo.
The console is designed in silver all throughout its body, with the image of a Slime mascot from the popular gaming franchise printed on the side.
The Dragon Quest edition of the PlayStation 4 also has a Metal Slime that is dripping over the console's edge, which is probably so far the cutest way to protect the USB ports of the PlayStation 4.
Yuji Jorii, the creator of Dragon Quest, inspected the console himself when it was presented to him in the press conference, as Atsushi Morita, the new President of PlayStation for Japan Asia, looked on.
Atsushi Morita is the nephew of Akio Morita, the late co-founder of Sony.
The Dragon Quest edition of the PlayStation 4 will be launched alongside the release of Dragon Quest Heroes for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Dragon Quest Heroes is the first game from the massively-popular-in-Japan gaming franchise to be released on any PlayStation console for nearly a decade. The game will be an action game similar to the Dynasty Warriors franchise of Koei Tecmo, which collaborated with Square Enix for Dragon Quest Heroes.
The hack-and-slash game will immerse fans of the franchise into the familiar Dragon Quest universe.
Sony is hoping that the release of Dragon Quest Heroes, along with the Dragon Quest Edition of the PlayStation 4, will provide the company with a boost in its sales next year, as the performance of the PlayStation 4 in Japan has not reached Sony's expectations due to a lack of games that will appeal to the Japanese video gamers.
Dragon Quest Heroes will be released in Japan in spring of next year. The Dragon Quest edition of the PlayStation 4 does not yet have a price or a release date, but it should be coming out in about the same time as the game.
Dragon Quest fans outside Japan that are looking to acquire the video game, the console, or both may have to do some extra work to acquire them, as the chances of an official release outside of Japan are very low.
Sony's PlayStation 4 has outsold rival Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U for the seventh straight month, with Sony also recently announcing that there have been 10 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold worldwide.
Overall, the latest generation of gaming consoles have outsold the previous generation, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One already having sold 80 percent more units in the United States for the first nine months since they were launched compared to the same time for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
