Jimmy Olsen was in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" but his appearance was short and not entirely sweet.
Fans have been speculating for months if the character will be part of the film since he's a close friend of Clark Kent over at The Daily Planet but even those on the lookout might not have realized he's in the scene he's in.
SPOILER WARNING for those who have not seen "Batman v Superman"
The truth is, you can't miss Olsen in the movie.
In the brief time that he was in it, he did make the audience flinch, as he was shot in the head after being outed as a CIA plant while interviewing an African warlord with Lois Lane as a photographer. However, Lane's companion was not identified, making him appear as another throwaway character in the film.
Why treat Olsen this way?
"We don't have room for Jimmy Olsen in our big pantheon of characters, but we can have fun with him, right?" said Zack Snyder, explaining that they came up with the little aside as they were tracking where the movies could possibly go.
Though the scene did shock moviegoers, the director actually softened the blow by not identifying the photographer from the beginning. Olsen does reveal himself upfront in the film's "Ultimate Edition," which is due to come out in summer.
To add to the effect he wanted to achieve, Snyder was keen on casting a famous actor, specifically Jesse Eisenberg.
He recalled meeting Eisenberg with his wife, producer Deborah Snyder, pitching the idea of a sudden-death cameo. But when the actor left, he turned to Deborah and asked her about instead considering Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
Olsen ended up being portrayed by Michael Cassidy, who was also part of Smallville as an editor for The Daily Planet. Some fans thought the role would go to Scoot McNairy. However, McNairy is in the movie as an embittered amputee who lost both his legs in the aftermath of Metropolis' destruction in "Man of Steel."
